Born and raised in southern California, Brett Conine stayed close to home and continued the legacy of Cal State Fullerton baseball. The Houston Astros selected Conine in the 2018 MLB Draft with their 11th round selection and quickly excelled.
An immediate assignment to low-A Tri-City in the New York-Pennsylvania League saw Conine throw to a 1.99 ERA, a precursor to what Conine would do in 2019.
In A-ball Quad Cities, Conine again posted a sub-two ERA and received a promotion after five starts. Brett struck out 11.4 batters per nine innings at high-A Fayetteville before getting another promotion to double-A Corpus Christi. A two ERA in 18 innings concluded his stellar 2019 campaign: a 2.20 ERA across 114.1 innings at three different levels.
After the COVID-19 pandemic, Conine was assigned to triple-A Sugar Land. He pitched there for all of 2021 and 2022. Still young in the Astros system that was beginning to lose its starting pitchers, Conine seemed close to the show. However, an injury led to his release during spring training in 2023 and caused Conine to miss the entire season.
Conine joined the DockHounds to begin 2024 but failed to make the opening day season. After his first appearance in a year and a half, it became clear Conine belonged in the rotation, and he set the DockHound single season record for innings with 105.1 in 18 starts. Conine started the first playoff game in franchise history and got the nod to be the 2025 opening day starter.
